Drawbars are a valuable addition for logistics companies that want to increase their haulage capacity by adding more trailers. Although simple in design, drawbars have vast applications across multiple sectors, ranging from agriculture to transportation. They are common in rail transport, road trailers, and both large and small vehicles. They are also used in industrial and recreational equipment.
Drawbars are a jack of all trades because they can be used in various applications. The only requirement is choosing the right one for the right type of haulage and applications. Some of the standard applications of drawbars include:
Drawbars are pretty common in the industrial sector. They are mainly used by tractors hauling other agricultural equipment, such as ploughs. Most of the drawbars used in these applications are specialist drawbars that have additional functions beyond dragging the equipment.
In the agricultural sector, drawbars can also be used in trailers that bring in food and supplies and in trailers that carry livestock. The addition of a drawbar boosts capacity and increases functionality, allowing you to do more without spending a small fortune.
Drawbars also have extensive functions on the road. Whether they help add a trailer to an articulated truck or artic or drag a small trailer on a camper van, the applications of drawbars on the road are unlimited. However, their primary purpose is to tow and make a connection between a tractive vehicle and its load.
Some light vehicles can also be fitted with a drawbar. These applications often feature an A-frame drawbar attached to a tow ball coupling. While using these drawbars, about 10% of the trailer’s gross weight is transmitted through the coupling. This makes drawbars an excellent choice when you want to increase your capacity and carry extra loads in a trailer at the back of a pickup truck or create extra space for your camping and hiking equipment.
In these setups, it is crucial to select the correct type of drawbar for the specific application and achieve optimal results, while ensuring maximum safety during operation.
Drawbars are also extensively used among heavy vehicles in pushing or pulling haulage. Although push applications are mainly considered special, the drawbars are quite common in pulling applications.
The most common drawbar configuration among heavy vehicles is the A-frame drawbar which is attached to the front of a trailer and connects to a tow coupling on the artic or truck.
In heavy vehicle applications, the drawbar is attached using a drawbar eye, which is different from light vehicle applications, where the drawbar is attached using a tow ball. The drawbar eye is about 40 to 50mm in diameter and connects to a bolt-and-pin coupling.
These drawbar couplings transmit almost no downward force through the coupling. When choosing a drawbar, it should not be confused with a fifth wheel. To operate a drawbar, there must be a trailer, and the drawbar is designed to reduce the transfer of weight to the hauling vehicle. A stack difference with the fifth wheel is that it is designed to transfer some of the load’sweight to the hauling vehicle.
